Greetings attendees of MechaCon 2317!

MechaCon is getting closer, and we have received another message from one of our Ambassadors through SolNet. This transmission is from Ambassador Ellyn Stern!

Ambassador Ellyn Stern is a classically trained actress, voice actress, director and writer, whose credits span over film, television, and stage, starting at the age of 12. She has voiced hundreds of characters in games, animation, and anime, starting with Robotech. Some of the other shows she can be heard in are the new Lupin III Blue Jacket Series, Skipbeat, Bleach, Ghost in the Shell II: Innocence, Star Ocean 1 & 2, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Samurai X and more!

Ambassador Ellyn Stern has also directed a Navajo dub of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (the first film ever to be dubbed into a Native American language)! Be on the lookout for a new sitcom written by Ambassador Stern which stars Richard Epcar and herself. Also, she will be on stage starring in Daughter of My People, Jihard, Sister Africa, Radio Berlin. Her children’s book, “It’s Hard to Give a Butterfly a Hug” can be found on Amazon.com!

Here are Ambassador Ellyn Stern’s responses to our quick question email interview:

Q1. What has been your most challenging role?
A1. I always find the most challenging roles are the roles in front of me. i can’t think of a role that has been impossible. I love challenges. Of course, screaming is challenging when it is prolonged.

Q2. What has been your best experience with fans?
A2. Mechacon remains one of my all-time favorite cons because of the fans! So warm and generous. I LOVE MECHACON!!!

Q3. What do you like doing in your spare time?
A3. I love creating. I write, I do theatre, go to theatre. I love hiking, researching history, genealogy…the newness of all things!

Q4. If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
A4. I would be a leopard. I love cats, their resilience, their curiosity and their need to explore.

Q5. What’s the last thing you watched on TV or Film and why did you choose to watch it?
A5. CALL THE MIDWIFE and BETTER CALL SAUL. Midwife for the phenomenal scripts, superb acting and directing. Better Call Saul for the quirky edge of your seat scripts, directing, character development, and terrific actors.

Q6. If you could spend a week anywhere in the world where would you go?
A6. Right now, I want to go to Italy, and Africa!

Q7. What are your top four favorite roles you have voiced?
A7. I love all of my voices. They are each of my children. Receently, Agatha in Pokémon, Characters in Lupin III, Harraway in Ghost In The Shell Innocence, Masaki Kurosaki in Bleach to name just a few. But I’ve done hundreds of voices and each one is my love.

Q8. What was the reasoning/motivation that got you into this profession?
A8. I was starring in a film and I was asked to do voice work on a film. One role, one film led to another, and after hundreds of roles, it rolled into a career. The voice work chose me! And I love it!

Q9. What would you tell someone that is aspiring to become a VA?
A9. First, study acting. Learn character development. Voice work is making the voice your own, not copying someone else’s characters. Each of us has our own voice. The voice you were born with is your money voice. Where do you fit in? What characters would you think you would most fit into? Cartoony voices are out for the most part. Natural sounding voices are what sells. Take voice classes so you can learn how to breathe properly and sustain a line. Do not think that you have a nice voice and that’s all you need, for when you audition, you need to have your technique together so that you are competitive.

Thank you, Ambassador Ellyn Stern, for taking time out of your busy schedule to respond. If you’re wondering where to catch Ambassador Ellyn Stern during MechaCon 2317, watch for signing times and panel schedules each day during the weekend, so you don’t miss your chance to ask some questions of your own.
