2094- An American aerospace firm develops a fully functional, portable fusion generator. Deuterium and tritium fuel source means less than 100 lbs. of solid materials are needed to power a reactor for a year. Greater power generation capabilities allow for more powerful magnetic field generation, opening up entire new horizons in particle research.

2096- Construction is completed on the High Orbit Muon Accelerator with major variations from the original design due to increased power generation capabilities of new fusion technology.

2102- First Ceres habitat built to begin mining the asteroid belt for materials necessary to supplement Earth’s depleted resources and for Martian colonization.

2109- Construction begins on the first Martian colonial fleet, consisting of one colony ship and three smaller, reusable transport and supply ships that will run in a continuous loop. Using fusion rockets, these craft can make the trip to Mars in only a few months.

2124- The Mars colonial mission is launched. Three months later, 162 human beings become Martian citizens.

2129- The first terraforming tower comes online in March of 2129 at Mars’ northern polar ice cap and begins slowly converting sub-surface water and sublimated CO² into gas to increase the density of the Martian atmosphere. By August, a second tower at the south pole is also up and running.

2132- Researchers at the HOMA, while performing a completely unrelated experiment involving quark-gluons, detect an effect that can only be explained by a spin two boson. Repetition of the experiment confirms that they have discovered a low-energy method for manifesting gravitons. By the end of the year, researchers have confirmed that this generation method results in instant extra-dimensional dispersal when the reaction is denied power, making these “artificial” gravitons safe and controllable.

2138- The first fully functional artificial gravity system is activated in a new state-of-the-art habitat on Ceres. It is the first extraterrestrial habitat to offer Earth-like gravity, and its success opens up whole new possibilities for extra-Earth colonization and spacecraft design. Within a few months of, plans are already underway to colonize the moons of the outer solar system, now easily within reach with renewable energy sources and artificial gravity both a reality.

Later that same year, engineers at Voronin Industries, working out of a research facility on the dark side of the moon, run their first successful test of a graviton device designed to bend space-time in such a way as to decrease the distance between two points in space. A laser fired through the device strikes a reflector in orbit around Jupiter and returns to the Moon in only 11 minutes, just over a tenth of the time it would normally take for light to travel from the Moon to Jupiter and back. The team of scientists are credited by the media and the general public with creating “faster than light” travel. The catchy term “FTL,” is rapidly adopted by the public in describing this breakthrough, despite the fact that scientists are clear that the use of this technology does not accelerate any object to anything approaching the speed of light.

2140- Voronin Industries, without government funding, but with the blessing of UNOOSA, launches 27 long distance probes equipped with “FTL” drives that will allow them to travel to planets around distant stars in search of new discoveries, including new worlds for human expansion.

2143-  The Metioche spacecraft is launched, carrying the largest gravity generator yet built, designed to alter the trajectory of a large, ammonia-rich comet, with the intention of crashing it into an uninhabited section of Mars’ southern hemisphere. This is designed to create a runaway greenhouse effect that will warm the Martian surface. The project scientists claim that with this ammonia added to the already augmented atmosphere, the Martian surface will be suitable for some hearty plant life (lichens, mosses and even some cold desert shrubs) by the end of the century. Metioche, using fusion rockets and a prototype “gravitic drive” takes six years to complete its mission.

2145- Two new colonial missions are launched, one from Earth, bound for Europa, and another from Mars bound for Titan.

Six of the Voronin FTL probes return from their missions to nearby stars with a wealth of new information on several types of stars and wholly unexpected information on the planetary systems of nearby stars. None of the 27 planets cataloged by these probes appears habitable by human standards, though several have indicators of being able to support other kinds of life.

2146- The fifth FTL probe returns to Earth with data on a habitable planet orbiting a red dwarf star in a binary system 22 light years away from Earth. UNOOSA is almost immediately granted funding for further studies of the planet and the refining of FTL technology. The newly discovered planet is dubbed “Freyr,” after the Norse god of fertility and peace, and its parent stars “Wodan” and “Frigga,” also after Norse deities.

2149- The Metioche spacecraft returns to Mars behind its comet, which, after being slowed and placed into a degrading orbit, eventually crashes spectacularly into the Hellas impact basin on Mars’ southern hemisphere. The combination of the sudden release of subsurface CO², the massive cloud of ice and dust from the comet and the Martian surface, and the added effect of a water vapor being released as the comet entered the atmosphere creates the desired greenhouse effect. More importantly, within a few weeks of the impact, this increase in gas combined with the large amount of gas released by the polar towers increases atmospheric pressure to 6.9 kPa, high enough for colonists to finally walk on the Martian surface without a pressure suit (though a breather and extreme cold weather gear are required, and radiation exposure is still an issue, albeit less than before the comet impact.

2152- An unmanned ship carrying a dozen satellites and several surface rovers is launched to gather detailed data on the conditions on the newly discovered planet Freyr. This time the data is transmitted back to Earth using a series of relays that use FTL technology to send data bursts from Freyr in only six to eight months.

2156- The substantial data collected from Freyr shows that it is easily capable of supporting human life with only a few precautions. With the leaps made during the colonization of other bodies within the solar system, there is no doubt humans can live and prosper on Freyr.

2160- Construction begins on a space station between the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn. This station will serve as the construction platform for the first FTL-equipped colonial ship to take 600 people to Freyr to establish the first settlement beyond the solar system. The station itself is small and minimalist, with the focus of manpower and materials being on the ship, which will need to house 600 people for over two years, and will need to carry supplies and materials for the construction of safe habitats at the end of the journey.

2173- With construction complete, the first interstellar colony ship, Skidbladnir is launched and begins its twenty-one light year journey to the planet Freyr with six hundred colonists aboard.

2176- Skidbladnir arrives safely in orbit around Freyr. Over the course of two months, the ship is landed in stages at three separate settlement sites. The ship is disassembled for use in the construction of shelters and its three fusion generators are used to generate power for the new settlements. Four colonists are lost to various accidents and natural threats, but by the end of the year, the dream of colonizing a world outside the home system is a reality.

2215- The United Nations is deemed irrelevant and is dissolved following the Russian, Egyptian and Israeli governments becoming members of the EurAsian-African Union, leaving China and its controlled territories the only nation in all of Africa, Asia and Europe not covered by the new political union.

2240- In response to heightening tensions between Earth and the colonies of the outer solar system, the EurAsian-African Union, in conjunction with the American Coalition, began construction on Varunastra Base, a fully functional military outpost, inside a series of lava tubes in the Oceanus Procellarum region of the Moon.

2246- Construction of Varunastra is completed. The Moon is granted a colonial charter, with the city of Thunderhead, adjoining Varunastra, as its capital.

2279- After years of building tensions over political and economic disputes between Earth and the outer colonies, the three Jovian moons declare themselves independent and petition the other colony worlds for support. Later that year, Earth dispatches a fleet to Europa with the intention of putting a swift end to colonial revolution, and launches the first assault of the Jovian Conflict.

2293- Earth forces, having received intelligence suggesting that an experimental weapon was being designed at one of the habitats on the Saturnian moon of Enceladus, launch an unprecedented nuclear strike that kills almost four million people and renders Enceladus completely uninhabitable. Public backlash against Earth is instant and catastrophic.

2313- The Owaan Uprising begins with a surprise attack on United Fleet headquarters on the Moon by a previously peaceful and subservient android race.

GEARE: Chapter 1

2316- The Treaty of Titan is signed, ending the Owaan conflict.

2317- The United Fleet flagship, the U.F.S. MechaCon docks on Crescent Station to host the first annual celebration of the signing of the Treaty of Titan. In honor of old Earth tradition of Crescent Station’s sister city of New Orleans, the celebration takes the form of an anime and fan convention of the kind popular in the early 21st century.

The Jovian Conflict


The Jovian Conflict was the final and most destructive human war in humankind’s history, and the catalyst that finally spurred humanity to establish something that appears to be a lasting peace. While the end of the war resulted in a unified humanity, there are few who would claim, out loud at least, that it was worth it. The total estimated death toll by the end of the 14 year war was over 3 hundred million souls, almost equal to the death toll of every war of the previous three centuries combined. While it in no way mitigates the horrific levels of death and destruction that occurred during the conflict, it should be noted that despite the common name given to the war, neither the root causes nor the military actions of the war were limited to the colonies of Jupiter’s moons. In truth, Saturn’s colonists suffered the worst losses of the war by far, and both Mars and Earth lost more lives than the Jovian moons. The name stems from the fact that it was the Jovian colonies who struck the first blows against Earth, and from the fact that it was, as usual, the Earthlings’ term for the conflict that gained common use after the dust settled.

The surprise attack on Enceladus was the most important event in the Jovian Conflict. Earth forces, having received intelligence suggesting that an experimental weapon was being designed at one of the Saturnian moon’s habitats, launched a brutal and calculated surprise attack. Not knowing which habitat housed the alleged research facility, Earth’s military leadership at the time simply destroyed them all. Eight million people were killed in the bombings, either from the bombs themselves or the decompression of the habitats. Another three million died in subsurface shelters, either from radiation or hypothermia. All ships attempting to leave the surface were destroyed, for fear one of them might be carrying information on the experimental weapon. Reinforcements from Titan attempted to defend the colonies, but they were hopelessly outnumbered and their nearest allied forces were days away. No colonial on or in orbit around Enceladus survived.

The attack was so vicious, the death toll so high, that the Allied Colonial leaders on Ganymede were discussing surrender. Then, two days later, Mars, previously Earth’s only colonial ally aside from the moon, and its largest supplier of military spacecraft, declared it was withdrawing all support from Earth forces and would fire on any Earth ships approaching Mars or its moons.

Martian Prime Minister Josef Kagan said following the attack on Enceladus, “This action by the governments of Earth is without question the worst atrocity ever committed in the history of humankind, and an act of mass murder unsupportable by any article of war by a supposedly civilized people. The Martian people believe in the cause of a unified humanity, and I cannot, Mars cannot, in good conscience, continue to support these butchers who have done nothing but harm to a cause they once claimed to champion. My colonial brothers, this tyranny will not stand. Mars is with you, and if the people of Earth think that a small thing, they would do well to remember where our world got its name.”

It was the turning point in the war that resulted in the utter destruction of the existing political structure of Earth. Between numerous revolutionary groups on Earth itself, and the massive assaults mounted by Allied Colonial forces against Earth’s outposts and major centers of government, the power structure of Earth was torn down seemingly overnight.
In the aftermath of Enceladus, the Earth forces involved claimed insisted that they were working on intelligence regarding an experimental weapon program, but no evidence of any weapon or manufacturing facility was ever found.

Admiral Ano ‘Ōpūnui, leader of the strike force that attacked Enceladus, said he was given orders and intelligence suggesting that Enceladus was aware of the imminent attack and that any ship leaving the surface should be considered hostile and extremely dangerous. No evidence of the orders was found in communication logs or any of the attacking ships’ databanks, and all Earth governments claimed ignorance. Despite this, several EurAsian-African Union officials were charged with crimes related to the attack. The admiral was found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to life in a military prison. Dozens of subordinates received similar sentences.

The president of the American Coalition issued an official statement condemning the attack, and no AmCo officials were ever charged, but it is widely believed, especially among colonials, that their intelligence agency was secretly responsible for the report that led to the attack.
No Australian officials were found to be involved. Australia voted to leave the union only weeks after the attack, and declared itself sovereign and neutral. African and South American leaders, having been vocal in their opposition of the war, and having historically differed from their northern allies on military matters, were asked to assist the Martian courts in the investigation and prosecution of those involved.
