February 5th, 2008 INDUSTRY GUEST UPDATE The legendary Carl Macek confirmed for MechaCon IV!
MechaCon is honored and delighted to welcome ROBOTECH creator Carl Macek to Cajun Country for MechaCon IV!
Carl Macek
Carl Macek began his association with Japanese animation in 1984. He worked with Harmony Gold, U.S.A. to develop the groundbreaking anime series ROBOTECH that has been credited with igniting the still growing anime movement outside of Japan. Following his success with ROBOTECH, Macek began working for D.I.C. to develop original animation and merchandising properties. This led to his association with John Kricfalusi and later Bill Kroyer. Macek worked with Kroyer as a writer/producer and then split off with Kricfalusi to start an independent animation studio that later became Spumco.
In 1988/89 Macek joined with Jerry Beck to create Streamline Pictures – a distribution company dedicated to bringing Japanese animation into North America. Streamline brought such classic anime films as AKIRA, VAMPIRE HUNTER D, FIST OF THE NORTH STAR, ROBOT CARNIVAL and WICKED CITY (among others) into theaters, television broadcast and home video for over a decade. One of his most enduring projects during this period was the English-language adaptation of the Miyazaki classic MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO.
In the late 1990’s, Macek returned to original animation production and was instrumental in developing several projects (HEAVY METAL 2000 and later LADY DEATH). However, he still maintains his interest in anime. Most recently, he has adapted, produced and directed English-language versions of Tomino’s classic 49-episode fantasy AURA BATTLER DUNBINE. He continues to adapt Japanese anime for the North American market – most recently with GALAXY RAILWAY, NARUTO, BLEACH and KYO KARA MAOH!
Currently, Macek has been working in on a slate of original projects as well, including: WAR EAGLES – a novel inspired by Marion C. Cooper’s unrealized masterpiece set just prior to the start of World War II; THE D’ARC; GIRL IN THE IVORY TOWER and several others. Creating strong compelling stories and unforgettable characters is the hallmark of Macek’s unique brand of storytelling.
His efforts and output have been both praised and criticized with equal zeal over the years. But one undeniable fact remains – the current acceptance and growth of Anime would certainly be different had it not been for Macek’s groundbreaking work bringing Japanese animation to the largest possible audience.
For more information on Carl Macek and his impressive career, please visit our guest page.
Join us in welcoming Carl Macek to MechaCon this August 1-3, 2008!

For those who plan to get a room at the Lafayette Hilton, please make your reservation through our Accommodations page so we can be credited for your rooms.
Making your reservations through the online portal is the easiest method of ensuring you get the MechaCon room rate for your hotel reservations.
If you reserve your room by phone, be sure to ask to be put in the "MechaCon Room Block", otherwise, MechaCon won't be credited for your reservation. If you've already reserved a room, call the Hilton to double-check that your reservation is in the MechaCon Room Block. If not, please ask to have it moved there. If they say they can't move it (which they should be able to), just tell them you want to cancel your current reservation and re-do your reservation in the MechaCon block. There is absolutely no charge to do this!
We need your reservation in the MechaCon Room Block (both registrants and dealers alike), so please make your reservations through us. For every room night booked at the Hilton in the MechaCon block, the con gets a few dollars knocked off the rental space... dollars that go toward insuring even better MechaCons in the future.

Tommy Yune
Tommy Yune
has worked for over a decade in the comic book and video game industries. His early game development experience includes character design of the pioneering 3D fighting game FX FIGHTER for the Nintendo SuperFX chip and conceptual design of the award-winning JOURNEYMAN PROJECT series. He also wrote and illustrated hit comic book titles such as SPEED RACER, RACER X, ROBOTECH, and DANGER GIRL: KAMIKAZE which were published by DC Comics'Wildstorm and Cliffhanger labels. His first work in feature animation was creating the computer-generated opening sequence of Kevin Altieri's GEN13.
Tommy grew up on a steady diet of anime, watching as much PRINCE PLANET, GATCHAMAN and CASSHAN as he could in Asia and the United States. Then he shunned television and went back to being a responsible student to the delight of his parents. However, right before entering the UCLA School of Engineering, ROBOTECH brought anime back into his life and he eventually found himself at the ArtCenter College of Design instead. His parents wept.
Tommy first worked in an official capacity for the ROBOTECH universe by helping design Robotech.com for its launch in 2001. He has since become Harmony Gold's creative director and oversees new development, including ROBOTECH: THE SHADOW CHRONICLES which completed production in 2006.
With production of ROBOTECH: SHADOW RISING well underway, team MechaCon is biting at the bit to hear what ROBOTECH goodness Tommy will bring to whet fans' appetites next August!

Let me begin by saying that every theater screening Anime Bento will show ALL the films in High Definition. I still get alot of questions by people asking if their movie theater playing Anime Bento will be screening TSC in HD and let me say the answer is YES!
Now there will be bonus features following the screening after the end credits are completed, so its important to STAY IN YOUR SEATS if you want to see them. While there is some footage from Birth of a Sequel used, there is quite alot of new footage that has never been seen outside of Harmony Gold before. Some of it will be exclusive to Anime Bento and I think you will enjoy it.
Yes the latest updates for ROBOTECH: Shadow Rising will be a part of Anime Bento. We have been very tight lipped on the convention circut regarding the latest on Shadow Rising in part since we feel this should be shown in theaters (hint, hint) rather than in a hotel ballroom.
This will be largest theatrical High Definintion release of Anime ever in North America. (If I'm in error please let me know and I'll gladly post a correction) If you want more Robotech or Anime to be shown on the big screen at a theater near you this is your chance to let your voice be heard by buying a ticket for Anime Bento. NCM wants to make Anime Bento a yearly event, along with expanding out into even more markets. So, if you want to see that happen, be sure to buy your tickets and get your butts into the theaters' seats!

Back in his own world, Al has been unlocking new secrets of alchemy and gaining incredible powers, all in the hopes of finding Ed. Karas - The Prophecy
MIKURA IS ON THE RISE AGAIN... Tokyo - a city populated by both humans and by ghostly beings. They exist in both dimensions, seen and unseen: spirits, apparitions, demons. The balance between these two dimensions has long been upheld by the city's guardian raven Karas and his masters. But that balance has been thrown into disarray as Eko, a former Karas, has attempted to seize power and bring order to the streets through force. The entity Yurine, who represents the will of the people, stands in his way with her newly risen Karas. Now an ageless battle stretching across both dimensions and killing humans and spirits alike is in progress between the two sides and their armies. Karas is humanity’s last hope.

August 12, 2007 MechaCon 3.0 a resounding success! Thanks to everyone!
MechaCon 3.0 was a huge success!
Thanks for your support!
We'd like to thank everyone for helping to make MechaCon 3.0 a huge success! Our heartfelt thanks go out to all our attendees, volunteers, and staff that made it all happen.
With your help this year, we raised $1,885.00 for Faith House, the local haven for abused women and children. Special thanks to all the bidders, as well as those who donated items for our auction. A special congrats to Michael Roberts for winning the first ever MechaCon Platinum Pass at the charity auction. We'll do our best to make sure you get your money's worth out of it next year!
We'd like to apologize to all of you for the crowding this year at the cosplay contest, and a few other events. We assure you that we are working to resolve this problem for next year, and we are currently looking into our options to make sure you have the best convention experience possible, at MechaCon IV! We've got our dates set for next year, and we'll be making an announcement about it shortly.
Special thanks to our DJ, David Adams a.k.a. DJWildfire, for not just one, but two fantastic House Parties. Next year we will have a guest DJ (to be announced) since David will be unable to join us as his army unit is heading to Iraq to do its part to fight terrorism. However, David will be spinning again at the MechaCon House Party in 2009. Our hearts are with him. Be safe David, and come home soon!
Thanks again to all the industry support we received, the awesome guests we had the pleasure of entertaining, the dealers, artists, and everyone else who had a hand in making this year a success. We look forward to seeing you all at MechaCon IV when we'll be pushing the sky.
