Hello and welcome to MechaCon’s Cosplay Chess. Back by popular demand this will be our third year with Cosplay Chess as a main event. For those of you who are not familiar with what cosplay chess is let me explain. Cosplay chess is played like regular chess, except when the chess players move a piece there is a corresponding Cosplayer for that piece who moves as well. When one player takes out the other players piece the two corresponding Cosplayers will battle it out on a larger than life-sized Chess board. For you Harry Potter fans this event functions a lot like wizards chess. So come expecting wonderful costumes, exciting battles and dramatic deaths.
This years theme is TBA
In order to allow everyone an equal chance to participate, we will accept sign ups ONLY for the backline pieces(King, Bishop,Knights and Rooks) before the con. The pawn spots will be filled at the con itself. This will allow those who are unaware of the event or those without forum access a chance to enter. All participants will need to check in at the sign up table prior to Sunday. Signing up online is only putting a place holder for you on your desired spot. If you have not checked in at the registration table by 4PM on Saturday you will be bumped to the second round. Minors will need to have a guardian sign the liability form for Cosplay Chess.
COSPLAY CHESS RULES
- We will have a second round (time permitting). You can participate in both rounds ONLY if there are spots open at the end of the first round. Priority for spots in the second round goes to cosplayers who were not in the first round. Sign up forms will be present at the event for the second round.
- You must be in costume to participate in this game, however everyone else is welcome to watch. Final say on positions are up to the Coordinators in charge. We are not accepting OC’s (original characters). If you are unsure about your costume ask about it.
- Actual violence will NOT be tolerated under ANY circumstance. Fights between pieces are to be mock battles only. Anyone who is seen to be violent or acts in a violent manner, whether physically or with outlandish verbal language, will be escorted from the event and replaced by someone else without hesitation.
- “smack talk” within reason is encouraged! Healthy competition is FUN!
- Food and Drinks will not be allowed on the chess floor.
- Do NOT wear shoes that have sharp points or edges onto the chess floor. This is to preserve the chess board for future use.
- Do NOT bring powders or anything that will make a mess onto the chess floor.
- This is REALLY IMPORTANT. STAY IN CHARACTER!!!! You have to be able to stay in character and able to banter with people you do not know.
- Pay attention to your team leaders (aka the chess player who will be moving your pieces)
- Attending the pre-meet for Cosplay Chess is MANDATORY for participation in the first round. The pre-meet will be on Saturday (time and location to be disclosed at check in at the Cosplay Registration table).
- We ask all participants to learn their characters signature attack method (ie. Roshi’s Kamehameha wave), plus actions if defeated. As this event is for both participants AND the audience, we want to put on a good show. Don’t just walk up to the other piece with your boomstick and go “bang”. Play the part…. Likewise if you are defeated, don’t just drop down and die….die with glory….just think Scott McNeil and the Deathscythe.
